Week 6 highlights three county teams

by admin

Oct. 2—It will be a light week around the Anderson and Houston County area with only three county teams playing games in week six of the season.

Westwood, Cayuga and Frankston get some much needed rest as they are not playing this week.

Here are the week six area previews for the remaining schools:

Elkhart at Troup

Time and Date: 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4

Location: Troup Tiger Stadium, 927 Arp Drive, Troup, TX 75789

Game Notes: The Elkhart Elks are on a three-game losing streak following last week’s district opening loss to West Rusk, 28-8. The Elks (1-4, 0-1) have only scored eight points in each of the last two games. Troup (3-2, 1-0) beat Arp 31-20 last week. The Elks defense will be keying on Bryce Wallum, who rushed for 227 yards and scored three touchdowns while Brett Wells tacked on 123 yards rushing and scored one touchdown. Defensive leaders in tackling for Troup last week were Noble Kendrick (14) and Luke Skillern (12).

Grapeland at Alto

Time and Date: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4

Location: Cam’Ron Matthew Field in Arp.

Game Notes: If you like offense, then Friday’s game could be a must see in Alto as the Grapeland Sandies averaged 36 points per game, while Alto (5-0 overall and 1-0 in district) averages 37 points per game. The Yellowjackets offense runs through quarterback Camdyn Almond and athlete Zack Battle. In last week’s 27-24 victory over Cushing, Almond went 11-of-15 passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns. In five games this season, the Sandies have allowed 22 points per contest. Grapeland Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jordan Wood will have to figure out how to get his offense going against a group who only allows 8.6 points per game. Bryson Johnson and Maleek Johnson will need to have strong performances to bring home a win after a tough loss to Overton last week.

Avalon at Oakwood

Time and Date: 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4

Location: Panther Memorial Stadium, 388 FCR 331, Oakwood, TX 75855.

Game Notes: The Avalon Eagles are 5-0 overall and have outscored opponents, 283-85. That comes out to 56.7 points offensively to 17 points given up defensively. In five games, junior running back Josh Novak has 885 yards and 15 touchdowns rushing. He is also 11-of-22 for 246 yards and eight touchdowns. Junior Kade Johnson is another player to watch as he is 19-of-37 for 313 yards with seven touchdowns. He is second on the team in rushing with 146 yards and five touchdowns. With two more games before the start of district play, Oakwood Athletic Director and Head Football Coach J.J. Johnson said he would love to see his team get some big momentum and this would be the perfect time to get it against a top program in Avalon.
