UConn women’s basketball finalizes 2024-25 schedule with Big East conference matchups revealed

by admin

The UConn women’s basketball team has its final 2024-25 schedule after the Big East released its conference dates and matchups for the upcoming season on Wednesday.

The Big East has been decimated by coaching turnover and the transfer portal over the past several seasons, and UConn is poised to be the runaway favorite to win both the regular season and conference tournament for the 11th consecutive season. Only two Big East teams besides the Huskies qualified for last year’s NCAA Tournament, and neither made it out of the second round.

Creighton figures to be the Huskies’ toughest competition in 2024-25, and they will face the Bluejays first on the road in Omaha, Nebraska on Jan. 25 then at the XL Center on Feb. 27. Marquette, who also made the tournament last season, lost most of its 2023-24 roster after head coach Megan Duffy was hired at Virginia Tech, and UConn will get its first glimpse of the new-look Golden Eagles on Jan. 1 in Milwaukee. Villanova has been a contender in the conference for several seasons with star forward Maddy Siegrist from 2018-23 but the Wildcats’ best players in 2023-24, guard Lucy Olsen (Iowa) and forward Christina Dalce (Maryland), both transferred to Power 4 programs during the offseason.

UConn opens Big East play with a rematch of the 2024 conference tournament championship against Georgetown on Dec. 15 at home. The Huskies kick off the 2024-25 season unofficially with their annual First Night event on Oct. 18, and the team plays its first exhibition game against Fort Hays State on Nov. 3. The Huskies’ non-conference schedule includes eight teams that competed in March Madness last year, including a highly-anticipated rematch from the Elite Eight between UConn and USC on Dec. 17.

The Huskies reached the Final Four in 2023-24 on a miracle run with just six players in the regular rotation, but the team expects to have a much deeper bench this year if it can stay healthy. Superstar guard Paige Bueckers is back for a fifth season of eligibility — and going through the offseason healthy for the first time since beginning her college career. Azzi Fudd, the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2021, will return after an ACL tear ended her 2023-24 season after just two games. Coach Geno Auriemma signed the No. 2 recruiting class in the country headlined by No. 1 2024 recruit Sarah Strong, and he added former Princeton point guard Kaitlyn Chen as his first transfer signee since 2022.
