Tony Stewart’s Mentee Calls Out NASCAR’s Talladega Mismanagement After ‘Big One’ DPV Blunder

Steven Magee once said, “Confusion creates chaos, causing creativity.” However, at the Talladega playoff race, the chaos caused destruction. In the huge wreck that took place on lap 183, 28 cars were affected, and that called for a caution. During the caution period, the NASCAR safety team approached the cars and asked the drivers to get out so they could tow the cars off the track. Although the team voiced their requests, some drivers were not ready to leave their vehicles.

Chase Briscoe, one of the drivers involved in the wreck, spoke to the media after the race, and that’s where he explained what went down. The NASCAR safety team tried to get the drivers out of their cars so they could tow the vehicles, but according to Briscoe, it was the governing body of NASCAR that told the drivers to say put. There was a lot of confusion on the track, so let’s take a look at what Briscoe had to say about the DVP issue.

It’s important to note that the Damaged Vehicle Policy has been a hot topic recently. After Ryan Blaney was denied the chance to continue his race at the Glen, many started questioning the rule put in place by NASCAR. Things got agitated when a similar incident happened to Josh Berry in Kansas, where the driver refused to get out of his car. In the end, Berry was towed away, but in a wreck of 28 cars, how many can the safety team clear out?

In a situational incident like what happened at Talladega, many cars that were damaged were allowed to finish the run as there were barely any laps left. However, when Chase Briscoe was in his car after the wreck, there was confusion that started to take over the track, and that’s what he explained in the post-race interview. When Briscoe was asked about the wreck, he responded, “Yeah, the wreck. I don’t know what happened, but there was definitely a lot of confusion on the backstretch as far as what to do and how to do it.”

He explained how it was for him behind the saying, “It was pretty frustrating, to say the least. So, I don’t know; you know, it was weird.” Briscoe explained how it took a while for the cars to start moving after the wreck, as he said, “I don’t really know what to make of that, just because there was a lot of confusion for sure for us inside the car.” 

Breaking down the reason for the confusion, Chase Briscoe spoke in favor of NASCAR, saying, “You know, the officials are doing the best they can in their job, but they’re telling you one thing, and then your team is telling you NASCAR is telling them a different thing. It was just very confusing, for sure.” 

The wreck really played with the outcome of the race, especially for Briscoe, who came 30th after the late race incident. The Stewart Haas Racing driver is in the playoffs; however, that is not the only big thing that’s happening to him.

Chase Briscoe is having one big year for sure. Many life-changing events are taking place in his life simultaneously and most of it is good news. Except for the fact that Stewart Haas Racing is shutting down, the bright side is that he found himself a seat in Joe Gibbs Racing for 2025. If that was not enough, he also managed to fight his way into the top 12 after clutching his playoff spot at Darlington.

But if that doesn’t feel like it’s enough, Briscoe is also expecting twins with his wife, about whom he spoke about after the Talladega race. Briscoe explained where his wife is with her pregnancy as he said, “She was texting a second ago saying she’s had pressure today, so, yeah, the C-section is Tuesday morning. So hopefully, she can make it there and make my job a lot easier this weekend if you can just keep them in there.”

Although Briscoe is in the top 12, to make it into the next round, he will need to outperform most drivers because, as of now, he is the last driver in the playoff standings, with 32 points below the cutline. If he doesn’t recover from the incident at Talladega, he will be eliminated before round 3, and with that, he will lose a chance to win the title for SHR for the last time.
