Today is Nov. 20, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, the women’s basketball team lost a 79-68 game at Mississippi State.
Brooke McCarty and Ariel Atkins combined for 37 points, but the Longhorns struggled defensively against Morgan William (23 points) and Victoria Vivians (19 points) and the team couldn’t recover from a second quarter in which it was outscored by a 26-9 margin. With the loss, Texas dropped to 1-2 during a 2016-17 season that it eventually compiled a 25-9 record in.
That Mississippi State team was coached by Vic Schaefer, who would take over the program at Texas after the 2019-20 season. Schaefer went 2-1 against Texas while at Mississippi State, and he was 0-1 against UT as Sam Houston State’s head coach.
Schaefer is one of three people who has both coached and coached against the Longhorns. Gail Goestenkors’ Duke teams went 1-3 against Texas. Karen Aston was beaten by the Longhorns while at North Texas in 2011.
