In front of a large crowd assisted by “Elementary School Day,” where the school hosted just south of 5,000 elementary children, the Texas A&M women’s basketball team got its first win of the season Thursday.

The 55-51 win over the UTSA Road Runners evened the Aggies‘ record to 1-1.

The Aggies were led by Sahara Jones with 16 points, who hit half of her 10 shots in the game. No other Aggies were in double-digits, but guards Janae Kent and Aicha Coulibaly scored seven apiece to contribute to the win.

Roadrunners’ forward Jordyn Jenkins led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 46.7% from the field.

The Aggies shot 35.3% from the field, while the Roadrunners shot 33.9%. A&M also led in 3-point shooting (5-for-16 to 3-for-16), free throws (14-for-22 to 10-for-19), and rebounding (40 to 37).

The win comes after a season-opening loss Monday to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 62-56. The Aggies shot just 27.3% from the field at home in the loss but bounced back nicely Thursday.

Up next for the lady Aggies team is another home contest against Western Michigan at 2 p.m. CT.
