KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Current finished their historic regular season on Sunday with a 3-1 win over the Chicago Red Stars.

As the team wraps up the regular season and looks towards the playoffs, their fans know that they can compete with any team in the league.

“Just knowing when you go to the game that you know they’re going to win,” said Mohamed Almaghrabi.

He went to a Current regular season game this year and is excited about the playoffs.  “I like the fact that some tickets aren’t too expensive. The other day, it was like 28 bucks to catch a playoff game.”

The season kicked off with the opening of CPKC Stadium. “It was really nice, and I thought it was like a really cool addition to the city,” said Hope Johnson.

“It has been very exciting to the brand new stadium and just the enthusiasm around female sports, like this is just amazing,” said Current fan Cynthia Wattree. “I’m glad to see that Kansas City is kind of rolling out the red carpet for them.”

The Current’s success may lead to the addition of another professional sports team in Kansas City, as last week, Patrick Mahomes said he would welcome a WNBA team.

“We want to get basketball out of Kansas City in general, and the WNBA and the success that they’ve had this last season and these last few seasons,” said Current co-owner and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “It’s kind of a no-brainer. I mean, to try to get a WNBA team in Kansas City.”

Current fans were supportive of a WNBA team.

“I play basketball,” said Eliza Eblen. “So, like I’m pretty into basketball. My whole family is, so we have to leave the state to go to a basketball game.”

“We’re a sports town, and really seeing the investment and lifting up of women and just kind of seeing how the city is ready to change, would kind of put ourselves on the map,” Wattree added.

Mahomes thinks that the recipe for success that his ownership group used to support the Current can be used to lure a WNBA team.

“You see the support that they have, so let’s try to get a WNBA team in here as well,” Mahomes said.

And Wattree thinks a new women’s sports team will lift women’s sports even higher in Kansas City. “It’s really exciting to see that, you know, little girls can also see themselves out there and they’re seeing that the city is saying you’re worth it and you matter.”
