South Georgia Tech Lady Jets finish Pete Arrington Classic with 1 – 1 record

The Cape Fear Community College Lady Sea Devils of Wilmington, North Carolina, walked away with three wins to capture first place in the South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets Pete Arrington Classic basketball tournament in the hangar, November 29 – December 1.

Cape Fear defeated the SGTC Lady Jets 70 – 67 and then took another narrow 59 – 57 win over the Albany Tech Lady Titans. Their third win of the tournament came against Andrew College’s Lady Tigers in a 78 – 48 decision to walk away from the tournament as the only undefeated team.

The Lady Jets were 1 -1 in the tournament. After losing the 70 – 67 decision to Cape Fear, the Lady Jets bounced back to take a 73 – 48 win over Southern Union. They were scheduled to play USC Salkehatchie but USC had to drop out of the tournament with injuries after losing to Andrew College 63 – 40 on the opening day.

Albany Tech finished at 1 – 1 with an 81 – 61 win over Southern Union and the narrow 59 – 57 loss to Cape Fear. Andrew College finished the tournament with a 1 – 2 record. They opened up with a 63 – 40 win over USC Salkehatchie, which had to finish the game with four players. Then they dropped a 70 – 55 decision to Southern Union and a 78 – 48 loss to Cape Fear.

Sophomore guard Mio Sakano led the Lady Jets in scoring in their three-point loss to Cape Fear. She had a total of 23 points and was four of six from the three-point line. She was paced by freshman guard Stephie Salumu who had a double-double night with 13 points and 15 rebounds. She also had three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Sophomore guard Enola Papin was the only other Lady Jet in double-digits and she had 11 points.

Freshman guard Duilly Silva tossed in six points; freshman Jamiah Gregory and Hayda Toro both walked away with four points each and Mariia Ignatchenko had three points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Carter and Maria Favero closed out the scoring with two and one points respectively.

The Lady Jets were ahead by as many as 10-points early in the first half were ahead 32 – 30 at the halftime buzzer. Cape Fear came back in the second half and outscored the Lady Jets 22 – 17 in the third quarter to give them the three-point lead that would elevate them to victory. Both teams came up with 18 points in the final quarter.

In the Lady Jets second game of the tournament, SGTC pulled ahead by as many as 22 points before going into the half with a 41 – 19 advantage and then securing the 73 – 48 win. Freshman guard Kalya Carter was the leading scorer in that game. She came off the bench to have a double-double night with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Sophomore Mio Sakano, freshman Jamiah Gregory and sophomore Enola Papin were also in double-figures with 16, 15, and 14 points respectively. Hayda Toro came away with five points, Stephie Salumu and Mariia Ignatchenko both added two points, and Cheyenne Preston closed out the scoring with one point.

The Lady Jets are off until they travel to the Palm Beach State College Classic on December 13 and 14 to take on Florida State College of Jacksonville and Palm Beach Sate College. They travel to Marianna, FL on December 19 to face Chipola College and then host St. Petersburg College on December 28 as well as Eastern Florida State and Daytona State College on December 29 and 30 for the Lady Jets Holiday Classic.

The Jets play Chipola College on December 11 and then return home to host Tallahassee Community College at 3 p.m. on December 14 in the Hangar.
