Ottawa Senators Prospect Suffers Injury In His First Game Back In Belleville

by admin

For the past week, while Ottawa Senators starting goalie Linus Ullmark was out with an injury, Mads Sogaard took Ullmark’s spot on the NHL roster. Now that Ullmark has returned, Sogaard has taken his spot on the organizational injury list.

On Sunday morning, Ottawa announced they had returned Sogaard to the Belleville Senators. Several hours later, Sogaard suffered a lower body injury early in the third period of a scrap-filled 5-2 loss to the Syracuse Crunch. He had to be helped off the ice by captain Garrett Pilon and defenceman Filip Roos.

The injury occurred during a wild scramble in front of Belleville’s net during a 4-on-4. As Sogaard slid to his left, the puck squirted out to his right and onto the stick of Syracuse’s Derrick Pouliot. As Pouliot scored, Sogaard lunged wildly back to his right to try and make the pad save, and that’s likely where the damage was done.

At a glance, one can imagine a groin or knee issue being equal possibilities.

Leevi Merilainen came in and backstopped the B-Sens the rest of the way, and based on how Sogaard looked as he left the ice, the net is probably Merilainen’s for the foreseeable future. But we’ll know more in the next day or two.

With Sogaard’s arrival back in Belleville today, Michael Simpson was loaned to the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears, where former Senator Matt Carkner is the head coach and GM.

A day earlier, the two AHL clubs’ parent teams met in Ottawa, with Sogaard backing up for Anton Forsberg in the Senators’ win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Sogaard got into one NHL game last week, coming on in relief of Anton Forsberg in an 8-7 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Kings.

Sogaard hails from Aalborg, Denmark and was drafted by Ottawa in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft.
