New Mexico State (2-1) fell to UTSA (2-1) at home on Thursday evening. It was the first of a doubleheader at the Pan American Center, with the Aggies’ men’s team following against Texas A&M Corpus-Christi.
The Roadrunners took control in the first quarter with a 25-16 lead after the first 10 minutes. UTSA largely maintained this control in the second quarter and took a 39-33 halftime advantage into the locker room. Both teams scored 17 points in the third quarter before the Roadrunners pulled away in the fourth quarter to win by double-digit points. NM State failed to score in the final 2:34 of the contest.
UTSA forward Jordyn Jenkins was a thorn in the Aggies’ side, scoring more than a third of the Roadrunners’ points at 27 on 9-for-14 shooting. Graduate student guard Molly Kaiser led NM State with 23 points, with senior forward Fanta Gassama the only other Aggie to score in double figures with 11 points.
Both teams shot nearly identical from the floor, with the Roadrunners shooting 45% and NM State coming in at 44.4%. Three-point shooting made the difference, with UTSA going 50% from beyond the arc and the Aggies going 33.3% from the same distance.
The Aggies will stay home for their upcoming game against Western New Mexico (0-3) next Wednesday. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
