National champion UConn men’s basketball team to visit White House on Sept. 10

by admin

The UConn men’s basketball team will be making a second trip to the White House in as many years next week.

On Sept. 10, head coach Dan Hurley and the Huskies will be honored by President Joe Biden for winning their second consecutive national championship.

UConn will visit the same day as the national champion South Carolina women’s basketball team.

“(UConn is) one of the premier programs in the country and that’s not hyperbole, it’s a fact,” President Biden said when the Huskies visited last year. “This team has proven that there’s no quit in UConn, just like there’s no quit in America. None. There’s nothing we can’t do when we believe we can do it if we do it together and that’s exactly what you all did. That’s what sports in this country is all about: possibilities.”

UConn puts stamp on championship season with White House visit

This year’s trip will be the sixth White House visit for the program, which has been recognized by four different presidents: Bill Clinton in 1999, George Bush in 2004, Barack Obama in 2009 and 2011, and Biden in 2023 and 2024.

UConn finished the 2023-24 season with a 37-3 record, setting a new program record for wins as the Huskies won the Big East regular season and tournament, and extended their streak of double-digit wins in the NCAA Tournament to 12.

The Huskies became the first team in 17 years to go back-to-back and are looking to become the first team to win three titles in a row since John Wooden’s UCLA teams more than half a century ago.
