With the Yankees defeating the Kansas City Royals in Game 4 of the ALDS on Thursday night, they officially joined the Mets as the first two teams to clinch their spot in this year’s Championship Series.
That means we now sit eight wins away from a potential Subway Series meeting in the Fall Classic for just the second time in baseball history.
While neither side will be looking past their next opponent — both of which are still to be determined — taking the crosstown rivalry to the game’s biggest stage is certainly a fun prospect for everyone to consider.
Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo was asked about the potential matchup while talking to reporters on Friday afternoon.
“It would be amazing,” he said. “Definitely if it comes to that point we would enjoy the heck out of it and it would be an amazing time to be part of the city and part of these two organizations. But both teams have something to take care of before, and that’s a big something.
“We’re going to be focused on that and not let our minds drift, but it would be a blast, there’s no doubt about it. It would be a dream scenario, I would enjoy the heck out of it and it would be a story you’d tell for the rest of your life — but there’s a big obstacle in the way so we’re focusing on that.”
For the boys in the Bronx, that obstacle will be decided by the winner of Saturday afternoon’s Game 5 meeting between the AL Central champion Cleveland Guardians and the surging Detroit Tigers.
The Mets, on the other hand, will be traveling to the West Coast to face off with the winner of Friday night’s Game 5 matchup between the division rival San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers.
While the orange and blue faithful certainly have plenty of opinions on who they’d rather see for the potential seven-game set, Nimmo insists that the Mets don’t care either way.
“We like our team against anybody,” he said. “I don’t think it matters who wins, either way, it’s going to be a tough challenge and a good team that we’re playing, but we feel confident about where we’re at as a team.”
