CHICAGO – The Chicago Blackhawks won two in a row to end their Western Conference road trip and came home feeling good about their game.
It felt like they had some momentum after stringing together two good games in a row. Unfortunately, they laid an egg against the Detroit Red Wings who came to Chicago and won convincingly.
Former Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat were in town with Detroit looking to make things hard on their old team. They did.

Kane didn’t collect a point but he helped drive offense on their top line with DeBrincat and captain Dylan Larkin.
DeBrincat opened the scoring with two seconds left in the first period. Dylan Larkin drove the net and the puck found DeBrincat who beat the clock.
At 8:42 of the second period, Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno made things interesting with his fifth goal of the season. For a few minutes, the Blackhawks had some life.
That is until Detroit’s top line took the momentum right back. This time, Larkin scored a goal assisted by DeBrincat.
In the third period, the Hawks’ hope of getting it tied again dwindled when Joe Veleno scored his first of the year to make it 3-1. Mortiz Seider and Michael Rasmussen collected the assists.
Late in the third with the goalie pulled, Andrew Copp threw and sealed the Red Wings’ victory. Lucas Raymond assisted on the goal. Pretty much all of Detroit’s top guys had it going in this one.
The Hawks fell to 5-8-1 with the loss and they will now get on a plane. They are headed south to take on the Dallas Stars for the second half of a back-to-back.
Kane and DeBrincat each played a big role in the Red Wings getting this done against their century-long rival. The crowd still showed some love to those two, especially Kane, but they weren’t pleased with the effort of the home team.
The Hawks have mostly done a good job of limiting odd-man rushes this season but it was a big problem in this game. It is hard to win when that’s the case. If they want a chance at beating Dallas on Thursday night, the chances against them need to be cleaned up.
