With the bulk of its roster returning and a steady slew of newcomers coming in from the transfer portal, the Iowa State women’s basketball team is one of the favorites to win a Big 12 Conference title in the 2024-25 season.
The Cyclones now know what it’ll take to win one.
Iowa State, which is coming off a surprisingly successful season, will try to follow it up with an even better one when it opens Big 12 Conference play on Dec. 21 at Oklahoma State. Iowa State will then have its first Big 12 home game Jan. 1 vs. Kansas.
The Big 12 schedule, which was released Thursday, includes Iowa State playing UCF, Kansas and Kansas State twice (home and away) and every other league opponent once. Opponents were picked based on a combination of historical results, geography and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitiveness.
Iowa State, which was thought to be in the midst of a rebuild last season, matched its best start in school history with a 6-0 mark in Big 12 play to begin the 2023-24 campaign. The Cyclones went on to finish fourth in the regular season with a 12-6 record. They also played in the Big 12 Tournament title game.
This year’s Big 12 Tournament will take place March 5-10 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Iowa State opens the season with an exhibition game against Central on Oct. 30. The Cyclones’ first official game will be Nov. 4 vs. Chicago State. The non-conference slate provides big tests against Iowa, UConn and South Carolina, among others.
