Nov. 12—The Permian girls basketball team came up short while Lubbock Coronado got its first win of the season.
The Lady Mustangs ended their three-game losing streak with a 47-38 win against the Lady Panthers Tuesday at Permian Fieldhouse.
Playing in the second week of the season, the Lady Panthers fell to 1-3 while the Lady Mustangs moved to 1-3.
“We needed a win,” Coronado head coach Ashley James said. “I felt like we continued to compete but we still made a lot of mistakes. But we were able to bounce back from those mistakes. It was really nice to see us compete for 32 minutes and finally pull one out.”
Coronado was led in scoring by Gracelyn Lota’s 13 points while Shy’la Blackwell had 10 and Syniah Brown finished with nine while Jay’a Spraglin had eight.
Permian’s Morgan Crow led the way in scoring with 16 points while Briseyda Sanchez had 10.
“It was tough,” Permian head coach Michael Ellis said. “They’re a good team. We’re a good team. They have a senior that’s really good and we’re still pretty young but hopefully, once the second season comes, we’ll be better.”
Lubbock Coronado began the game on a strong note, going on a 9-2 run.
The Lady Panthers managed to cut their deficit to 9-8 late in the first quarter.

Coronado’s Ciara Montes hit two field goals to give the visitors a 45-36 lead with under a minute remaining.
“Responding to adversity was huge for us,” James said. “We didn’t let anything get us down. We just turned to what was next and pushed the ball up the floor.”
The Lady Panthers will next be on the road against Monahans at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jerry Larned Sports Complex.
The Lady Mustangs will next compete at a tournament in Allen against Highland Park on Thursday.
