The NHRA is bringing the fastest vehicles in the world to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Ford Performance NHRA Nationals on Nov. 1-3.
Folks around the area know that the racing is different from the NHRA and when NASCAR is in town. But what’s the biggest difference?
The one similarity is in the beginning. The drivers qualify for the races. Now, the big difference is in NASCAR, the drivers have one session to qualify for starting position.
In the NHRA, there are four qualifying sessions available for each class to achieve one of the top 16 times to advance to the bracket-style eliminations.

The fastest qualifier takes the No. 1 seed and faces the No. 16 driver in the first round, No. 2 faces No. 15, No. 3 faces No. 14 and continues down the line.
The higher seeded driver, or the faster qualifier, gets to pick their lane for the bracket races. Then the drivers battle it out for a total of four rounds until there’s a winner. This is repeated for each class.
In the NASCAR Cup Series, there is typically group qualifying where half of the drivers go out and try to turn their fastest lap. The top half of each group move into the second stage of qualifying where they can try for the pole.
The other big difference between NASCAR and NHRA, is NASCAR usually has its races (Craftsman Truck Series, Xfinity Series, Cup Series) on different days, depending on weather, then leaves. NHRA events are multi-day events and drivers typically only see action for just a few minutes.
