The Southeastern Conference could have a new No. 1 team in the country entering Week 6.
In the national headliner of the Week 5, No. 4 Alabama defended its home turf and picked up its first marquee win of the Kalen DeBoer era as the Crimson Tide knocked off No. 1 Georgia 41-34 Saturday.
It seemed through much of the first half that Alabama would cruise to a win over the top-ranked Bulldogs, jumping out to a seemingly insurmountable 28-0 lead. But Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs refused to go away, outscoring the Crimson Tide 27-11 in the second half and briefly taking a 34-33 lead with 2:31 remaining in the game.

But clutch plays by Alabama freshmen on both sides of the ball helped DeBoer and Co. hold off what would have been the Bulldogs’ biggest comeback in program history. The first was a 75-yard catch-and-run from 17-year-old Ryan Williams for a go-ahead touchdown to give Alabama a 41-34 lead following the 2-point conversion. The last was a game-sealing interception in the end zone by Zabien Brown.
Elsewhere, Arch Manning started his second consecutive game for No. 2 Texas, as Quinn Ewers continues to rehab from an oblique strain in Week 3. Manning once again showed a glimpse of the future in Austin as the 6-foot-4 quarterback led Texas to its first-ever SEC win over Mississippi State behind a 26-of-31 passing day for 324 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Kentucky picked up its biggest win of the Mark Stoops era as the Wildcats knocked off No. 5 Ole Miss on the road in Oxford. It is just the sixth loss for Ole Miss at home since Lane Kiffin took over in 2020. Texas A&M won the “Southwest Classic” against Arkansas 21-17 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas as well.
