After its dominant 49-7 win over Arizona in the Territorial Cup on Saturday, some Arizona State football fans expected (or at least hoped) the Sun Devils to get a little jump in the College Football Playoff rankings to get closer to Boise State in the race for a bye in the first round.
The top four-ranked conference champions don’t play until the quarterfinals, and Boise State, of the Mountain West, is ahead of ASU football and Iowa State football, who play in the Big 12 championship game on Saturday, for that fourth bye in the rankings.
Boise State faces UNLV in the Mountain West championship game on Friday.
Arizona State fans did not get their wish in the latest College Football Playoff rankings release, with Kenny Dillingham’s team rising only one spot to No. 15. Boise State also rose one spot to No. 10 in the ranking, appearing to be in great shape for the fourth bye if it wins the Mountain West title.

Arizona State, Big 12 and college football fans lambasted the latest College Football Playoff rankings on social media:
Lots of frustration from the Big 12 fans, and rightfully so, on being behind Boise State for the 4th bye in the CFP.
See if you can spot the difference between the resumes below. Both Big 12 teams well ahead on both strength and raw resume. pic.twitter.com/js4mVKwEeW

All else being equal, if Arizona State, Iowa State, BYU, and Colorado were named Michigan, USC, Oklahoma, and Florida, they would all be in the at large discussion.

My biggest beef with the latest CFP rankings:
Why is Miami at No. 12? No top 25 wins. Two recent losses to Georgia Tech and Syracuse.
Arizona State (15), Iowa State (16) and BYU (18) all have better, or at least similar, resumes.

I understand the Big 12 is t as good or as deep as the SEC and the Big Ten, but Arizona State and Iowa State being that far behind Boise State , Indiana and SMU is wild. Three-loss Alabama at No. 11 is really rough. And Ohio State only dropping to No. 6 is tough.

Just call it the SEC invitational instead of the CFP. There is no reason that Alabama or Ole Miss should be ahead of Arizona State or Iowa State. Let it be known that if you lose to Texas Tech just go ahead and cancel your season.

There’s absolutely no reason Arizona State and Iowa State should rank lower than Ole Miss and Alabama. Not a single one.
Hypotheticals have ruined College Football. What’s the point of playing games?!

The Big 12 has as many 10-win teams as the SEC. It has more 10-win teams than the ACC.
Arizona State is criminally underrated at 15th

It goes without saying that if ASU wins on Saturday they are going to leap a few teams that are going to be idle this weekend. But the overall vibe from the committee is that even a Big 12 championship is not going to award ASU a spot in the top four. Damn shame. https://t.co/nR2x88pgnE

Yes, win, and you’re in, but you shouldn’t be a Power 4 conference champion with just two losses and still play the first-round game on the road. https://t.co/9EeiXlnUnr

Boise State doesn’t have a single win over a Power 4 team & they haven’t beaten a ranked team all year. Arizona State has 8 wins over Power 4 teams & they’ve beaten 3 teams that were ranked at the time.
Yet, ASU is ranked 5 spots lower than BSU, trash ranking system.
