South Dakota State women’s basketball suffered its first loss of the season against No. 16 Duke, 75-71, on Sunday.
SDSU had won its previous three games to open the season and was voted No. 25 in the WBCA USA Today Coaches Poll entering the matchup. The Jackrabbits still have two more non-conference games against top-25 competition: Oregon, which is ranked in the AP poll, on Tuesday, Nov. 26 and No. 4 Texas on Sunday, Dec. 22.
Duke edged out South Dakota State in turnovers, points off turnovers, and second-chance points. SDSU had 15 turnovers and the Blue Devils capitalized off that, scoring 21 points off those turnovers. On the other side, Duke had nine turnovers but the Jackrabbits only generated seven points off them.
The Blue Devils also outscored South Dakota State by 12 in second-chance points and outrebounded SDSU by six.
Jadyn Donovan and Ashlon Jackson led the way for Duke. Donovan posted a team-high 23 points on 11-for-17 shooting while Jackson scored 18 points on a less efficient 4-for-11 shooting. Donovan also corralled a game-high 15 rebounds to secure a double-double.
The Jackrabbits had three players score in double figures: Brooklyn Meyer led the way with a game-high 25 points, and Paige Meyer and Haleigh Timmer scored 12 and 11 respectively. Paige Meyer also had seven assists while Kallie Theisen led the team in rebounding with 12.
South Dakota State will travel to Laie, Hawaii to take on Georgia Tech in the Hawaii North Shore Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 23.
