IRWINDALE Speedway is set to close its doors for the final time after 25 years.
The racing track will host its final event on December 21.
Since opening in March 1999, Irwindale has hosted Nascar races, demolition derbies and drag racing.
It is located in Irwindale, California – around 20 miles east of Los Angeles.
Mayor Albert F. Ambriz paid homage to what the track has meant for the local community over the last 25 years.
“The Irwindale Speedway has been more than just a racetrack; it has been a part of our community’s identity,” he said.
“We are grateful for the memories created here and the passion the fans and racers have shown over the years.”
The 63-acre site was bought by IDS Real Estate Group two years ago.
At the time, plans for a new industrial business park were unveiled.
Fans will still have several opportunities to visit the 6,500-capacity venue before it permanently closes.
These include Thursday Night Thunder events.
Tomorrow a “Night of Destruction” event is set to go ahead.
The final Thursday Night Thunder will take place on December 7.
For the venue’s final goodbye, The Irwindale Speedway Farewell Extravaganza has been planned for December 21.
The event will feature plenty for fans to enjoy, including Nascar short-track races.
When Irwindale’s future was previously looking under threat in 2017, Tim Huddleston bought the property on Christmas Eve.
‘MORE THAN JUST A TRACK’
Upon news of its final closure, Huddleston paid tribute to fans and sponsors.
“Irwindale has been more than just a track. It’s been a home and gathering place for racing enthusiasts worldwide,” the president of Irwindale Speedway & Event Center Inc. said.
“On behalf of my wife Lisa and our partners Bob and Maureen Bruncati, we extend heartfelt thanks to our fans, racers, sponsors, and the City of Irwindale for their unwavering support over the past 25 years.
“We’re grateful for every moment and memory we’ve shared as a community.”
