What to know about Southern Miss football interim coach Reed Stringer, who replaces Will Hall

by admin

Will Hall is out as the Southern Miss football coach, officially fired by the Golden Eagles on Sunday. Reed Stringer was named the interim head coach.

Southern Miss (1-6, 0-3 Sun Belt Conference) has lost five games in a row — all by double digits — and plays at James Madison (5-2, 1-2) on Saturday (2:30 p.m., ESPN+).

Here’s what to know about Stringer.

Reed Stringer was Southern Miss football general manager

Stringer will move from general manager to interim head coach. According to his bio on the team website, his duties were to oversee “the daily management of the football program and all its administration pertaining to academics, player personnel and general duties in an effort to keep things running smoothly for both players and staff.”

Reed Stringer has connections to Dabo Swinney, Mississippi State

Stringer’s coaching career dates back to the early 2000s, beginning at Delta State and Mississippi State. He was with the Bulldogs for seven seasons before going to Clemson for one season in 2010 to work under Dabo Swinney.

After that, Stringer coached at Louisiana for seven seasons in various roles such as an assistant head coach, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. He joined Southern Miss in 2018.

Reed Stringer has been a successful recruiter

In 2012, Stinger was named the Sun Belt Conference Recruiter of the Year while at Louisiana by Scout.com. And in 2009, Rivals tabbed him as a top 10 recruiter in the SEC while he was at Mississippi State.

Reed Stringer has been with Southern Miss for a long time

Stringer has been with Southern Miss for seven seasons, longer than just about anyone else in the program. That includes athletic director Jeremy McClain, who was hired in 2019.

Reed Stringer played football at Delta State

Stringer was an offensive lineman at Delta State from 1998 to 2001 and won the DII national championship in 2000.

McClain was also an athlete at Delta State and briefly crossed paths with Stringer, though he was on the baseball team.
