Sources – Knicks waive injured guard Landry Shamet

The New York Knicks are waiving guard Landry Shamet, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

The move comes days after Shamet, 27, dislocated his right shoulder trying to make a defensive play in a preseason game Tuesday. He’s hoping to be able to rehab the injury without needing to have surgery.

Before the injury, Shamet — who was averaging 10.8 points in 22 minutes per game in the preseason and has shot 38.4% from three over his six-year career — was a sure thing to make the Knicks’ roster.

New York coach Tom Thibodeau has spoken highly of the guard multiple times throughout training camp, highlighting the ways he would fit in with the club. In particular, Thibodeau said he valued Shamet’s prior experience playing with Mikal Bridges and Cameron Payne — who both joined the Knicks this summer.

Because the Knicks are $3.6 million below the second tax apron, they will likely start the season with 12 players on standard contracts. The Knicks can have fewer than 14 players on their roster but for no more than 28 total days during the regular season and 14 consecutive days at a time.

New York will be allowed to bring back Shamet during the regular season.

ESPN’s Chris Herring contributed to this report.
