Jacksonville State football pounds New Mexico State for third straight blowout win

by admin

JACKSONVILLE − The Gamecocks are on a win streak.

After trashing New Mexico State 54-13 on Wednesday night at Burgess-Snow Field, Jacksonville State football is on a three-game winning streak, including two wins to kick off Conference USA play. The Gamecocks were led by Tre Stewart, who had 118 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and a receiving score. Tyler Huff threw for 196 yards and two scores, while the Gamecocks racked up more than 300 yards and five scores on the ground.

The Gamecocks (3-3, 2-0 CUSA) started with only a touchdown in the first quarter but kicked off the second quarter with a safety and caught fire with 26 points in the period as they never looked back.

Tre Stewart’s night to shine for Jax State

Five days after his best offensive performance of the season, Stewart once again powered the Jax State offense. Against Kennesaw State last Friday he had 134 yards on the ground and four touchdown. Against the Aggies, he scored the first three touchdowns for the Gamecocks and accounted for 121 yards and three scores in the first half alone.

Stewart has been in a running back committee this season but recently has shown he can be the lead back for the Gamecocks over the win streak.

Jacksonville State football run defense still has work to do

The Aggies ran for 117 yards in the first half, but most came on 38- and 23-yard runs. The Aggies normally average 150 yards on the ground, so it was trending that the Gamecocks were going to allow their sixth straight opponent to top their average this season. The Aggies ended the night with 182 yards on the ground.

The good news is that the run game struggles didn’t hurt the Gamecocks as the Aggies couldn’t put together a passing attack for most of the game and only scored one touchdown.

Jack Dawson excellence pays off for Jax State

No team ever wants to punt, but it pays to have a good punter who comes through in big moments. Dawson punted twice in the first quarter, both being 44-yard boots. They both landed inside the 5-yard line, and the Gamecocks were able to take advantage the second time. Juwuan Campbell picked up the safety for the Gamecocks, their first since 2022.

The Gamecocks then took advantage of the good field position, scoring a touchdown to get the lead out to 13. From there the Gamecocks were rolling.
