GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) —Students at Luke Elementary School in Glendale got a glimpse of the fast life by spending the day as professional NASCAR drivers. “Yeah, this is Iike one of my first experiences since I’ve been in preschool. It’s really exciting and fun,” said one student.
Students got to test drive the victory lane on the raceway, design their own race cars, and use high-tech simulators and videos.
It wasn’t just a day filled with fun but also a way to teach these kids about STEM education.
“They’re going to remember this hopefully for a lifetime, so it’s just that important to be able to have them realize how much STEM impacts everything they do. Whether you’re running a raceway or whether you’re driving a car, STEM has impacted in every avenue of that,” said Latasha Causey, the president of Phoenix Raceway.
The field trip was thanks to the partnership with Phoenix Raceway and the Larry Fitzgerald Foundation.
“Our goal is to put gasoline on their fire. Accelerate it. Put the wind beneath their sails and help them achieve what they hope to achieve,” said Larry Fitzgerald Jr, former Arizona Cardinals player.
Nearly 100 students participated in the event in honor of Veteran’s Day and the upcoming NASCAR Championship series. Luke Elementary is a purple star school that caters to many military families at the Luke Air Force Base.
