594 AHL Alumni On NHL Opening Day Rosters

With the National Hockey League season underway and opening rosters finalized the American Hockey League’s ties throughout the league are more apparent than ever.

According to an article published by the AHL, 594 league alumni are on NHL rosters to begin the season, making up 83% of all players.

Last season 87% of all players who played a NHL game were graduates of the AHL.

The St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins lead the way with 22 AHL graduates, while Calgary/ Chicago, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Seattle, Tampa Bay, Vegas, and Winnipeg all have at least 20 alumni.

The AHL notes 17 players who played in the AHL All-Star Game last season have earned their way onto NHL rosters to begin this season.

22 of the 32 NHL head coaches were coaches in the AHL at some point in their careers. Additionally, AHL alumni Jessica Campbell became the first woman to be a full-time assistant coach in the NHL.
