Bubba Wallace Being Labeled “Captain D*ckhead” by His Crew Chief Leaves NASCAR Fans Gasping for Air

Who doesn’t love a good radio exchange? With the stakes in the Cup Series playoffs getting higher than ever before, a funny interaction between drivers and their crew can give fans some much-needed respite from the bubbling tension. That’s exactly what happened at the 2024 YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway between Bubba Wallace, his crew chief Bootie Barker, and spotter Freddie Kraft. The 23XI Racing driver might not be competing for the title, but that didn’t stop him from entertaining fans.

Competing in his home race, Wallace was heard making fun of Bootie Barker after receiving pit strategy instructions on the 2.66-mile oval. In response, his crew chief jokingly called him “Captain d*ckhead”, prompting reactions from fans on social media.

Even though Bubba Wallace didn’t qualify for the playoffs, his season has had plenty of positives that the 23XI Racing driver can reflect on. A significant amount of credit for his performances goes to his crew chief Bootie Barker, who has used his wealth of experience to guide the 31-year-old on the racetrack. Barker has been around the NASCAR garages for almost two decades and has made a significant impact on Wallace, ever since both joined the team co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin in 2021. Despite the jokes shared between the two, Wallace and Barker share a close relationship, rooted in mutual trust and affection.

During the race at Talladega Superspeedway, Bootie Barker was heard telling Bubba Wallace on the team radio, “Yeah Bubba, from everything we could tell, your left rear has been some. It’s not like it’s been in the foot. Nothing we can do about it now. We’re hoping to come in four tires and fuel as quickly as we can and get you back out. Then we’ll assess if we gotta come back again before we go green.”

In response, the No. 23 Toyota driver made a tongue-in-cheek comment to his spotter Freddie Kraft, saying “Over/under 2 we are going to hear the exact same message from Bootie in the next 30 minutes.” Amused by the remark, Barker replied, “Well, captain d*ckhead. If I had to do it every time, I would.” Continuing the banter by pretending to be taken aback, Wallace responded by saying, “Captain d*ckhead, damn! Not very nice.”

Bubba Wallace has previously said that the rapport he shares with Bootie Barker is unlike anything he has ever experienced. What is said in the heat of the moment between the pair remains on the racetrack and doesn’t affect their relationship, a dynamic that he didn’t share with Derek Chauvin or Mike Wheeler in the past. With the dynamic nature of stock car racing, tempers can flare because of unforeseen incidents on the racetrack. However, Barker and Wallace’s relationship remains strong and has withstood the test of time despite the many ups and downs in the last four years.

While Wallace is racing for nothing but pride, he will hope to finish the remaining five races of the season strongly. A ninth-place result at Talladega was a decent outcome, especially considering that the ‘Big One’ affected 28 cars in a single incident, the biggest wreck in NASCAR history. The 31-year-old is yet to enter Victory Lane, despite finishing in the top five six times in the season so far, and will hope to break his winless streak in the weeks to come.

As expected, it didn’t take long for NASCAR fans to share their views about Bubba Wallace’s radio interaction with crew chief Bootie Barker. For many motorsports enthusiasts, listening to the behind-the-scenes conversations gives them a better insight into the relationship drivers share with their crew as well as a better understanding of race strategy. In Wallace’s case, it also provides a source of entertainment value, which prompted one fan to write, “Excellent example of why I listen to the driver radio’s more than the national broadcast (3x laughing emojis).

The 23XI Racing driver has had a topsy-turvy Cup Series season so far, having come close to qualifying for playoffs through points, only to miss out at the end of the regular season. Naturally, not all radio exchanges between Wallace and his crew chief have been as happy-go-lucky this season, which is why one fan wrote on X, “Loved this exchange, was definitely some of the most lighthearted radio I’ve heard from them this year! Good to hear them like that!

Echoing that sentiment, another fan expressed his enjoyment at listening to Bubba Wallace, Bootie Barker, and Freddie Kraft, going on to say, “These 3 are awesome together bet fans listening to the radio during races are having a hell of a time.” The Alabama native hasn’t always been a popular figure amongst NASCAR fans, especially after he door-slammed Alex Bowman during the cool-down lap at Chicago Street Course. Acknowledging that Wallace has received the short end of the stick, one fan wrote, “People can hate on bubba but man his radios are always funny (laughing emoji).”

One of NASCAR’s older fans shared that Bootie Barker’s personality has always been infectious. The former racing driver served as a television co-host on NASCAR Performance, which was a weekly program that was broadcast on the Speed channel. Recalling his time on television, the fan wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), “Bootie has been one of the most entertaining dudes around even dating back to those segments on Speed Channel back in the day (laughing emoji).”
