Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever was named 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year on Thursday, and congratulation came pouring in from teammates, present and former coaches, and the Indiana Pacers.

But the wishes that come with foreign accents hit a little harder.

“Catherine, darling!” started Temi Fagbenle, a Brit who sounded like she could have come straight from the “Ted Lasso” set. “I am so, so, so proud of you. So very well deserved. You’ve shown that not only do you belong but that you’re here to stay.”

“What a massive achievement. You’re a bloody weapon,” said Kristy Wallace, an Australian. “Super proud of you, mate.”

“You’ve changed the world in so many ways. You’ve done it with so much grace and I’m so happy to take the floor with you and to be part of this experience,” said high-scoring teammate and fellow WNBA All-Star Kelsey Mitchell. “I want to tell you to give yourself some grace, kid. You’ve done a lot of things that not a lot of people can do. I’m always going to be your fan. I’ll always be in your corner. I’m always going to be in your backcourt.”

Erica Wheeler, who lost a lot of court time to Clark but was her biggest fan on the sideline, was exuberant.

“Super proud of you, man, on how you block out the noise and handle your business, and also have fun with it,” Wheeler said. “You’re breaking all the records, bro. I don’t know what you’re going to do.”
