Western Connecticut State has hired former UConn women’s basketball player Maria Conlon as its new head women’s basketball coach.

Conlon, who starred at Seymour High School and played for the Huskies from 2000-04, was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. She played nearly 30 minutes per game in her junior and senior years with UConn, averaging a career-best 6.9 points and 3.4 assists per game in 2003, and was a part of three straight national championship teams.

“I am so excited to be a part of the WestConn community and to grow a successful women’s basketball program,” Conlon said in a release. “The university’s core values are perfectly aligned with mine. I am thrilled to be able to work with the current student-athletes and to offer many more opportunities to play college basketball in the future.”

Conlon was most recently head coach at Greens Farms Academy in Westport. She previously led Notre Dame-Fairfield to a state championship, and earned Connecticut High School Coach of the Year honors.

The Derby native also previously coached an international team in Iceland, and served as an assistant on the Southern Connecticut State women’s basketball team that won a Division II national title in 2007.
