Preseason Gameday Preview: Flyers vs. Islanders

by admin

The Philadelphia Flyers will take on the New York Islanders in their first preseason game at the Wells Fargo Center, where they’ll be looking to get back in the win column by bringing some of their biggest stars onto the ice.

The Prodigal Sons

Fans will be elated to see that star prospects Matvei Michkov and Jett Luchanko are in the lineup for this game, making their debuts on the Flyers’ home ice. Both have been standout names during training camp, with Luchanko having an especially strong performance that has gotten the Flyers higher-ups keeping a very close eye on him.

The pair delighted onlookers in their performances during the Flyers’ first preseason game against the Washington Capitals, and many fans commented on how noticeable their absences were during the team’s second outing against the Montreal Canadiens.

With Luchanko looking like he could be in serious consideration for an NHL roster spot, all eyes will most definitely be drawn to him during this game.

Guess Who’s Back!

Several Flyers stars are suiting up for their first preseason games of this year’s schedule, including Travis Konecny, Cam York, Garnet Hathaway, and Travis Sanheim.

Konecny said that it will be “exciting” to get back to playing in front of the home crowd, highlighting that, if the massive turnouts for the Flyers’ training camp practice sessions and scrimmages are any indication, they’ll have an enthusiastic for the game.

While these are returning players, the sentiment across camp has been that everyone is still fighting to cement their spots in the lineup, with the competitive spirit being evident in a couple of the aforementioned camp scrimmages.

The fact that it’s a preseason game won’t change how the players approach this game, with Konecny saying that they’re all treating it like any regular season game because of how hard players have been going in practice to prove how valuable they are to this squad.

Why Can’t You Just Be Normal?

It wouldn’t be the beginnings of a new Flyers season without some kind of off-ice drama happening alongside an exciting upcoming game, and this gameday was certainly a doozy.

It was announced that goaltending prospect Alexei Kolosov would be coming over to the U.S. to take part in the rest of training camp, following a summer of rumors that he wanted to stay in his native Belarus to play in the KHL.

It was also announced that the NHLPA “filed a grievance on behalf of Ryan Johansen” following the Flyers terminating Johansen’s contract earlier this summer.

There has been rampant speculation that the injury Johansen claimed to have once he was traded to the Flyers from the Colorado Avalanche has either been exaggerated or fabricated completely.

It’s important to note that, at this time, the official statements we have regarding this situation are that Johansen’s contract was terminated and that a grievance has been filed.
