ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Pretty much every college football analyst expected Michigan football to lose to USC on Saturday, but they play the games for a reason.

With Alex Orji at the helm as the starting quarterback for the first time, the Wolverines ran early and often while the defense got constant pressure on quarterback Miller Moss. The second half was a slog offensively and defensively, there were sudden lapses. The Trojans took a late lead, but running back Kalel Mullings wouldn’t be denied, ripping off a career-high 63-yard run to get the maize and blue into the red zone. A few plays later, on a fourth-and-1, Mullings hit paydirt, and Michigan took the lead, for good.
